I applied for a job in an agency I worked for many years ago and left on good terms.

  • Application Received 5/27
  • Administrative Pre-Screening 5/29 passed
  • Required Qualifications 5/30 passed
  • Preliminary Supervisor Review 6/2 passed

Now they have reopened the job advertisement. So I passed everything all the way up to and including supervisor review, but they decided not to contact me and instead reopened the position for applications. Seems a bit odd, but there's probably some sensible government regulation or policy behind it.

You left before, they don't want to hire you only to have you do the same thing.

How many applicants for this position also passed the Prelim Supervisor Review?

That was over 20 years ago, so I doubt it. I left the state.

Don't know, but I'm guessing not enough to meet some silly HR quota.

You never know who your competitors are.

What if someone else was considered as a better fit due to the set of skills they are particularly looking for?

You have 25 years of experience, but your rival has 27 years of experience.
You have degree from Georgia Tech, but he graduated from Princeton...who knows?

They didn't hire anyone. I'm not sure what are you talking about.

Well maybe they already have a short list of candidates selected...why do you think this is not possible?
They renewed the job posting but that doesn't mean anything.

And that guy with 27 years of experience and Princeton diploma eventually will lose to another candidate from University of Pennsylvania with 30 years of experience.

Why do you guess that?
Is your skillset very unique or hard to find?

Perhaps the supervisor wasn't happy with the pool of candidates, just becasue you pass the bare min, doesn't mean he or she wants to settle. Perhaps they are looking for something specific and keeping the rest in their back pocket. I'm sure the job has changed in 20 years.
