I recently applied for a job on USAJOBS about a month ago and the status of my application changed to "Referred." What does that mean? Is that a good sign that I will get the job?
It means you were deemed eligable and amongst the best applicants and put on a list sent to the hiring official.
My stats back when I was applying for fed jobs
40% were a black hole never heard anything from them again nor any status updates.
20% I got found not minimally qualified (for science jobs not sure how that could be)
35% I got found not amongst best qualified
5% I got referred to hiring official
Of that 5% I recieved a phone call at least from about 1/3 to 1/2.
It is a numbers game especially my profession where working for the fed is a dream job for anyone compared to what the private sector offers to science workers.
Yes, it is a good sign, but it's hard to say what your chances are for getting the job. From this point on, the selecting officials will review the lists of individuals who were referred, look at supporting documents, and make a decision on whether to interview someone. Not everyone who made it onto the lists will be interviewed - only the best candidates will be interviewed. Alternatively, there is a small chance that the selecting officials decide no one on the lists is an ideal match and ask HR for another set of lists/candidates.
It means that HR found you eligible, and your application was referred to the hiring official. But it doesn't guarantee that you'll get an interview, let alone the job.

This and this only. I wouldn't hold your breath until you actually get an in invitation to interview....
I've been referred for 4 jobs in the past month..still haven't heard from anyone..it's incredibly frustrating because I have applied to over 100 jobs in the past two months alone..good luck to us!

Well this is interesting news because I applied for a DEA job back in October and I check at USA Jobs weekly for updates, and nothing. So it's good to know that the status does change to indicate what's going on with your application.

Pretty much what happened to me. I did finally get hired as a 2210 GS11 and started in Dec 2014 but that job posting hasn't changed from referred to hired yet.
