how can i get from fast food/casual dining to something OTHER THAN FOOD? i'm currently working at mcdonald's(regular crew) and red robin(dishwasher) and i need out of the food industry. i have a BA in communication, but have no experience. my college career was kind of a wreck, but i wanted that degree. i had a plan to work for a company, but i made a mistake and now i need to wait awhile before i can go back to said company, and even then, i'll probably have to start back part time before going full time. i'm having to move back home to save on rent costs, away from orlando back to fayetteville, nc. my friend told me that it's better to apply locally, but i figured i'd get a head start, but nothing seems to be working. what can i do?! just wait until i'm locally back in town?

The BA in communication has been popular, and the market became flooded with them. It's still about the 6th most popular. Unfortunately without experience, the jobs are limited to mostly entry-level marketing, which means call centers.
Those seem to be hiring a lot with high turnover. It's not much of a pay increase but for your field would look better on a resume than McD or RR.

Look at management trainee positions in retail, grocery, and the rental car industry.

Go see if Enterprise Rental car will hire you for their management trainee program.

Enterprise Holdings Careers - Recruiters

It is a terrible job, but isn't worse than what you are doing now, you will get out of food, have the manager trainee title, and other companies do value workers who can stick it out there so there are other companies to jump to once you get some experience.

It actually is a pretty good option for people in your position.

911 operator/dispatcher. You won't get rich, but the job is very rewarding. More importantly, it's not in the food industry.

Join the military, your degree qualifies you to become an officer if you are so inclined. Great benefits, decent pay, great pension!

Why don't you get a receptionist job and work your way up the ladder

Can't you work way up? Fast food has a high turnover, one year should get you close to seniority, or two years.

It won't matter that it is a fast food place if you can list manager with actual duties

Did you network with professors or do any internships while in college?

not at all! one of my many downfalls

and i've tried to apply to enterprise numerous times, i never make it past the screening phone call. i probably could become a manager at mcdonald's; altogether i have almost 3 years as a mcdonalds crew member but i'm not comfortable being a leader just yet. but i have literally been applying to other jobs. i feel like every time the employers see that i've only been in food and have no other experience, they toss my application aside. i moved back home at the beginning of this month and i'm still unemployed because apparently it takes ages to transfer someone like, i mean REALLY
