All of the jobs I've interviewed for have a 2 or 3 step interview process. The first interview is usually a quick 20-30 minute phone interview. I'm assuming that the employer has narrowed the search to 4-8 applicants at this point. Some of my phone interviews have been rather informal with just 2-3 basic questions like "tell me about what you do at your current employer?" or "how would you bring change to the department if hired?". The purpose of this interview is to just figure out who you are and if your personality will work with the team.

However, I did have a first phone interview a few months ago where I was interviewed by 5 people in a conference room. Each person asked me 2 questions. It was rather unusual for this to be a first interview.

If you are selected for a second interview, it is usually in person or through Skype. At this point, the search has probably been narrowed down to 2 or 3 applicants. This interview can last 30min-1hr and has more traditional questions. For a trainer position I applied for, I had to give a quick 15min training presentation to a group of people.

I've only had one third step for an interview and it was simply to send over something I recently worked on.

How does the interview process go for you? Are your first interviews usually short phone conversations?

First is sometimes a phone call and sometimes it's a face to face. I've had it go both ways.

I've never spoken to HR before. What kinds of questions do they ask?

My experience:

1st Interview - Usually a phone screen. They ask a couple of questions (they all sound the same after a while) and then go over experience or resume.

2nd Interview - Usually in person.

I have had no phone interviews and I have been hired based off phone interviews without any face to face interviews.
