It really doesn't seem that hard to get a professional job after you have decent experience, so I think networking is over rated. The biggest thing is it just saves time. TIme searching for a job and taking time off work to interview because you usually get the job if you are referred, where otherwise it takes 3-4 different companies to interview with to get an offer. and 1-2 interviews per company.

If your goal is to get just any job, there is some truth to what you say, but if you actually want to get ahead, networking is everything.

Networking has allowed me to start jobs without completing an application more than once so I wouldn't say it;s overrated.
