Of course they do background checks and thorough interviews. Some people including in my family have this notion that getting a job at places like Walmart or Target are simple. No it is not easy. these are multi-billion dollar companies that screen future employees extensively.
Here is the reality, you are very unlikely to get hired. They get hundreds of applications for each job and they are going to choose the ones without a felony first. It may not be fair but that is the reality. You are going to need to know someone to get you in in the door at just about any place

Even if they are not opposed to hiring a former felon, Walmart tends to get thousands of applicants when they open a new store, for maybe 100-200 openings. If they are just adding more help to an existing store, they still have a lot of people on record that applied online. They also have a special online site for veterans, who get priority. If you need a job, no application is a waste of time, even if the chances are slight, if you don't apply that slight chance goes down to 0.
What JoeShades said. Even if you don't have a record, your chances are very slim without knowing someone from the inside. Even though it's an entry level job, there is still a ton of competition and it will likely goto someone who is attending college or someone that clicks with the interviewer. You may need to consult an attorney to see if it's possible to get the conviction reduced to a lesser crime.
