After having looked for work since August I have decided if I can't find a job I better create my own.
Have any of you been in this situation and ended up working for yourself successfully?

No, I haven't and I am tired of the run around from Human Resource departments.

I started a business 2 years ago. On paper it was going to make me a lot of money. In reality it makes me some pocket money and not much else. Even with all of the research I put into it I can't support myself with it.

Giving up is the first step towards failure. Take a moment, take stock in yourself, your skills, your presentation. Be critical and honest with yourself. If you need to get training, do so. Don't give up.

I think what a lot of people are facing is...they might be pretty good at what they do, a good worker, you know, show up to work on time, give 115%, stay on top of things...but there aren't enough jobs out there.

That is definitely true! Combined with the fact that the less competent ones seem to do the best, as though they stumble from one opportunity to the next & well talk about frustrating!

I got tired of trying to support my children as a single parent. I only receive child support sporadically...so I started working for myself. I started out providing in-home care services for the elderly. I had cared for children for many years, and this wasn't much different...I provided non-medical support. From there I transitioned into starting up a cleaning service. For a while, I worked both jobs until I booked enough regular customers to replace the 2nd job. I have 1 employee, and this business has provided for us very well. I make my own hours...which is a huge plus!

Sometimes, people know someone, so if they aren't so great at the job or are incompetent, they are covered.

I think that is true alot. I'd suspect alot of the reason why they are incompetent is b/c they never really had to be any better to get by in life, you know?
