Get a nice relocation expense budget too.

Look for less than an apartment... and do it all in stages.

Take an extended stay room for the first week or two...
use that time to find the get by job you'll need and which will cover cheap rent.

THEN... with an okish LOCAL job... share a house or apartment NEAR that job.
Take a deep breath. Poke around. Mke some friends in town.

THEN with a local address and actually having a job...
prospect/apply for the better job that actually suits.

THEN look to find an apartment of your own

This is the best advice I've heard on C-D for a long time. OP is in a catch-22 and this is how to deal with it. Thanks, Mr. R....

Federal and state jobs don't seem to care. I just moved that way and know others who have moved that way as well. I also moved for a state government job and met lots of people who moved for those as well.

That all sounds great in theory,but...1)I don't think I have any special skills of note,I did work in radio but it's quite competetive and I've only been working it as a side job of recently. As for 'getting' a nice budget, that would be great too...but just getting by on current income is just about cutting it leaving no room for savings.

2)Just finding a place with a wife and pets is not as easy as it was when I was younger and single.

No buts. That's how it's done for singles -- as your OP implied.
If you want to work in City X ...it's up to YOU to get there.

At least you don't have kids.

If wife also wants to move you can still do it all.
Mostly it's about making the conscious choice and then accepting the work/bother required.
Whining about it being hard gets ignored.
---

As a couple... Look for less than an apartment... and do it all in stages.

Take an extended stay room for the first week, two or even a month...
use that time to find the TWO get by job's you'll need and which will cover cheap rent there.
Most chains will accommodate a pet... or you re-home them.

THEN... with those okish LOCAL jobs... rent a sublet or small house NEAR those jobs.
This stage is what lets you live without dipping into savings.

Take a deep breath. Poke around. Make some friends in town.

THEN with a local address and actually having the get by local jobs...
prospect/apply for the better jobs that actually suit your skillset(s).

THEN -once you have better jobs- look for a better living situation if that's still warranted.
It could all take a year to settle out but don't expect less than six months.

Well it may not have been mentioned in OP but it's not for a single person...and did you see the part about pets? That's a huge dealbreaker in most places.

I can already tell from the overuse of the word 'whining' who you are here...
