Well technically I have a gap now that started in October 2017. Is that short enough? To be fair I was finishing up grad school and did Uber to get cash

To be fair my last boss over exaggerated about the position that I was going to do so I ended up doing a job I thought I’d love and hated it and after two years and grad school being stressful I decided to resign.

Another reason for a gap of employment could be due to discrimination. A candidate gets laid off/quits/gets fired and search for employment. The candidate is also 40+ years old but brings a plethora of experience and knowledge to his/her field. However, that would commensurate a higher salary--the potential employer refuses to hire this candidate and chooses a younger candidate who is "cheaper" and requires a lesser salary. And this cycle rinses and repeats itself. The job search, which initially took days, can turn into weeks, then turn into months, and maybe even a year. Discrimination is more blatant, more so than ever, in Corporate Murica.
If it were up to me robots should take this job over and exclude people who pick and choose!

No one has asked about it. However, two years ago it was a problem. I guess current relevant experience is most important.

His reasoning for telling candidates to do this is so that the employer knows right off the bat why you had a gap and there is no guessing.
I had several gaps in my resume due to layoffs and contract terminations since 2013. I put those reasons on my resume above the Experience section. I got tired of constantly being asked about gaps, especially by people who should know how volatile things can be in our market sector.

Yeah employers get a little nervous when they see employment gaps which is a little stupid. Sometimes it's just a matter of the applicant taking care of a sick family member or not needing to work and then circumstances change and now they need to make money.
