I just graduated and I found a company I really want to work for. On their webiste Job A was listed and I applied for it. Later I learned that they were having an onsite job fair and I decided to go hoping my chances would be better if I talked to a recruiter or hiring manager. I found out the hiring managers were doing interviews on the spot. I Interviewed and its seems like it went really well. Another hiring manager over heard some of our conversation and told me to talk to him after. There wasnt a position in his department I was qualified for on the listings but the manager said he really liked me and he'll find something for me. Lets call that job B. The hiring manager for job B said he was really interested in me and he'll call me next week and not to take any other job offers in the meantime.
At the fair the manager for job A said the other manager might be able to make me an offer quicker and I should take it to get in the company faster but he'll try to steal me back once I'm hired because his process might take longer.
The day after the job fair the hiring manager from job A called for a second interview and its scheduled for next week.
I'm more interested in Job B's department but should I take job A if I get an offer?

First you'll need to find out if the company has a required "time in job" commitment if you're offered by dept a; since you don't want that job as much and you may end up having a 6 month to one year commitment.

what's the difference between the two jobs/departments? Have you checked review websites for both? I'll also say that most large companies don't allow departments to "steal" or hire=away from other departments. My company (fortune 500) has a policy around this; and won't allow for salary increases if the job would be lateral (relatively same level of responsibility) and requires manager approval to move to another job if under a year has been held in your current position.

In general though, neither of these is a firm commitment - so go ahead and do the interview if offered by either department and see where things go.

I had something like that happen with a job I recently got hired for. They had 3 job openings and I applied for them all. They expected to train people for these jobs (entry level tech jobs). I was interviewed by a panel of 4 managers. I told them I was interested in learning any skills and tasks they wanted to teach me. I really liked the work that one manager was doing in his department and told him so. I also really liked a woman manager and we connected immediately, her work was not usually what I'd want to do but I liked her a lot. In the end she ended up hiring me of her own initiative. She told me I'd work half time for the first manager and half time for her. So far I'm working mostly for the first manager right now and urging the woman manager to send me more of her projects. It's working out well and I don't mind having two bosses. It's a small company with no drama.
