I reached out to a few recruiters to get some contacts in my desired relocation area. I'm applying to most jobs directly but I found one that appeared to get good reviews online and deals with my particular profession. This recruiter also only deals in direct placement so no temp jobs.
Had an initial phone call with her and everything was great. But then she said she needed me to fill out paper work before she could continue working with me. The files included a list of references and says I must provide 3, complete with address, phone number, and email.
I've heard recruiters request this so they can have access to new clients. But in this case this recruiter is in another state than my references so do you think they'd still contact my references for alternative reasons than verifying my work? I asked them this and they said they just like to have them on file so if I am in the running for a job they can just call my references and not have to ask me first. I'm still skeptical.
References should only be provided and screened as the last step of the hiring process. The offer should otherwise be contingent upon satisfactory reference checks. I never willingly provide reference information to those who want to prescreen references.
I tell recruiters I do not give references until I have an offer, some of them will move forward and some of them won't. I wouldn't do it if I were you.
Yeah most likely they were trying to use you for references and were not legit.
It's baffling though. I doubt a company 1000+ miles away that doesn't have offices where I'm at would want my references here.
