As some of you may know, I am semi-retired, in that plan A did not work out, and I'm working on plan B, which means I will have to remain gainfully employed, for at least another two years, even though I'll be 70 in August. I got a very good offer at a super rate as a contract employee, but the commute will be a killer. I'm talking two hours each way, four hours a day on the freeway. I was all set to tough it out and accepted the offer, then, don't you know, I got another offer, not quite as good, but with a much shorter commute. I took it, and backed out of the first offer. When I notified the recruiter, they laid a guilt trip on me about not living up to my commitments. What would you all have done?

UPDATE: Got the job, started last Monday. Nice building, good office spaces, great work space, a cubicle with high walls and a closing door. The work is not too boring, and the pace seems just a little frenzied, not too bad. My only complaint is that the break room, where the office employees eat lunch, is small and cramped, so I usually nuke my lunch and eat at my desk. Small price for a good rate and short commute, tho. One thing I like, they work a 10/4 schedule, ten hours a day for four days, off every Friday. If all goes according to plan, this will be my last contract in CA. Wife and I looking at Texas. Our son and his family moved there last year.
Nice! I'm in a similar situation. I received a job offer yesterday, and have until Thursday to accept. However, I've been interviewing with another company which I prefer more because they pay nearly double what the 1st company does. The thing is that I'm still in the interview process with the second company. I don't know whether to take the risk and decline the first offer and hope things with the second company come to fruition, or accept the 1st offer in case the second company decides not to hire me.
You may just have to accept the first job offer -- and then leave and hop over to the second company -- where you really want to work. Who knows how long that could take to come through -- IF you get it. Which I hope you do. But it's no where near a done deal yet....you're just interviewing at this point.
