There is a position open in the company. I am not really sure if I am qualified and there may be too much travel. I would like to collect information on it before I decide for sure. My boss wants me to start looking for other opportunities within the company as I have been in this role for some time.

How best approach gathering information? I am nervous if I start collecting information then I decide to not apply it will look bad. Should I let my boss know I am collecting info?

Who is in the position now? Ask them. If they're not there anymore, ask their boss.

As for an informational meeting with the hiring manager. Ask your questions to see if you think the role is a match for you. Explain that is the purpose of the meeting and to learn more about their job and group.
