I interviewed for a fantastic opportunity last week - right before the holiday. I know the company was closed both Thursday and Friday. The COO, who I interviewed with, is on vacation this week and at the end of our meeting said he'd be in touch the week of the 15th.
I plan on sending him a quick email reaffirming my interest in the position and mentioning a few points I've been thinking about to help me start off in the right direction. I receive news alerts from the local news station (it is out of town from where I live) and tonight there was mention of a competitor shutting the doors suddenly today at 12:00PM. I wondered if I should bring up this fact, letting him know I'm keeping up with local news. This is an interesting situation - say Lowe's closed and I interviewed with Home Depot....
I vote for not mentioning it as it's not relevant to your candidacy for the position. Stick to reaffirming your interest and taking your last opportunity to sell yourself. Keep it brief. Good luck!
If you want to send a follow up letter, you can. Either you get a response, or you do not receive a response.
I interviewed with a prospective employer. After not hearing back for one month, I sent a follow up letter. In the letter, I thanked the person for interviewing me and expressed my interest in the position and the company. One week later, I was offered a job.
I vote no, don't mention it. Just a simple "thank you for your time" would suffice. If a competitor has closed shop, that might bring more people into the application process for your job and there might be more experienced prospective candidates, possibly employees who have had management experience, and you don't want to bring that to his attention, it might make him think twice. The fact that you "keep up" with the news is irrelevant.
