Yeh any job that treats me this way must be a disaster area and wants me to turn it down.

A few years ago I was applying for a job in the place I already worked. And it wasn't a big place. And they told me I needed to take a math test. Huh? I already do math for you?

Ok fine.

When was I to do the math test? During work hours, timed, while I did my job. Which included phone calls. Other internal candidates had the same treatment. But if they didn't have a job with phone calls, they had no interruptions.

Later I was told that they didn't want me for the position and set this up to try to knock me out on an allegedly fair basis.

The email then gives the wage: a very generous $7.25 an hour. But here’s the kicker: to get hired on I’ll have to bring an ID and social security card (fairly standard) as well as my high school diploma or college degree(!).

I find this email is insulting on so many levels.

1. Doesn’t ask my preference for a time to interview.
2. States the wage (no room for negotiation), which is set at the federally mandated minimum.
3. Requires me to prove I am not lying about my educational background.

Yikes.
I don't see a problem with any of those requirements.

It's their position and their interview so they should be able to ask for whatever documentation they wish. Its not illegal. Did it occur to you that being able or willing to follow directions is a sort of test? But I guess the whole thread is moot...you can't even show proof you finished high school or college. Kind of a problem for any interview don't you think?

Being insulted by their request and by the salary seems less than useful. No matter what the salary was you essentially eliminated yourself from consideration. They didn't even have to bother with the interview. But its still their fault?

You should have those things immediately at hand for any job. That's not really an excuse.

How old are you? Cannot you keep all of your own important documents and ID for yourself, but your mama has to keep them for you? That shows the level of your maturity.

Lesson learned. Keep your diplomas nearby. Problem solved.

This sounds a like a fantastic job!!

It's really a higher wage than you realize due to working at home.

1. No gas costs, wear and tear on car or unpaid time driving to work
2. No time spent getting dressed in a nice outfit, fixing your hair
3. No real reason to spend more $ on expensive work clothes
4. Less likely to eat out for lunch and/or coffee due to a stressful job. You can eat healthy inside the house, make your own coffee
5. When your children get older, if you have any, you can be home with them.
6. Make your own food. You will save hundreds of $ a month and be healthier hardly needing a doctor.
A neighbor of mine is paid only minimum wage to answer her phone (not tech) YET she is able to get medical/dental benefits
for just $100 a month.

They've saved hundreds of dollars on food and feel great due to eating so healthy at home.

She sends me 2-3 youtube videos each month. This is the last video, I made this bread, it's Delicious!!

You could do a side gig if there is enough downtime instead- Taxes, Medical Transcription, etc..

It's about a quarter for each round bread vs $3.00+ and the bread is freshly hot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vVGq5V82pM

Why are you so rude? It is very rare for an employer to ask for that, and I was quite surprised.

Would you prefer if the OP was still living with his mother? Oh wait, you'd say "that shows the level of your maturity"

You sound like one of those people who nobody can please. And nobody wants to please.
