I typically work IT contracts anywhere from daily - monthly as they come up. I am wanting to travel to select areas and work , then after the contract is up , travel to another select city and work . This is kind of my dream job I want to make happen. It's obviously easier to have a few thousand in savings at least before starting. My housing situation would be staying with a room mate in those select cities or hotel if the contract is only a few days. I assume to most people , this is absurd and seems pretty stupid to do both financially and mentally. I have no kids and no intention of settling down anywhere , for a long time. I just want to travel and do the career I love.

Has anyone been successful with this?

Well, if you're going to do this, buy yourself an RV.

Short term apartment rentals are HORRIFICALLY EXPENSIVE. And hotels even more so. So you're not even going to even cover your living expenses.

Lining up housing with roommates/AirBnB's/hotels/short term rentals are a nightmare. Good luck working in one city on a 1 month contract and trying to get a short term rental with a 6-12 month minimum, in advance.

As bobsell recommended, get an RV. Instead going through the apartment/rental-hunting hassle at EVERY location, not to mention frequently packing/unpacking your possessions, just bring your whole house with you. You just need to line up a place to park it (monthly rates at campgrounds are much cheaper than nightly).

I'm looking to do the same as you, OP, but with engineering instead of IT. Look for a (consulting) company that will send you from one location to the next working on short-term projects/assignments. That way you don't have to worry about having something lined up once one contract ends.

I never hired an IT contractor for just a day. What sort of work have you done just for a day?

RVs aren't free. And there is the cost of maintaining them. And it costs money to park them someplace too.

You look for temporary corporate housing, and you go month to month. You have this cost as part of your billing rate so there is a tax advantage.
