I am fine with working 40 hrs/week but I want that the client not demand that I be attached to my desk from 9-5. I can finish my hours working weekends or nights? What would be the industry term for a job like that? I guess it is called flexitime? Do such jobs exist in the software industry given that I have over 2 decades of experience working for MNCs etc.?

That would be a freelancer or someone who has their own tiny company, but the real effort is going to be finding enough clients who are willing to pay you a good billing rate on a continuous basis. Usually the companies hire someone full-time from a staffing firm for that kind of role. Very small client companies don't want to spend much money so that is the other challenge.

Clients want you available during normal business hours for meetings even if you are working remote.
