So I applied for a management position with company X.
Haven't heard back yet and it has been 7 days.

While applying I guess I checked a box saying I want job alerts sent to me.

This afternoon I get an email that I am a good match for a way higher position.

Should I even apply or are the skills match emails just a bunch of BS.

Your thoughts please.

Read the job description and use your good judgment.

many times we get recommended jobs that are nowhere near a good match.

It's very simple:

You apply, you may be called for the position;

You don't apply, you may never get called for the position.

No one's opinion or assessment of the situation matters.

You asked for alerts and you got one. So reply.

I get the opposite kind of alerts - I’m interested in executive roles but get alerts for entry level ones because of a word match.

That's the problem with word matching software used by HR. An entry level job could say "this position reports to the Executive Director" and all the sudden you are getting alerts because the word "Executive" appeared in their job listing.

There is no intelligence behind those alerts. If someone comes in an alert, even if it is almost by accident and you think it's a good fit, then go ahead and apply. I doubt HR even pays any attention how you found out about the job.
