I'm a 62yo male with 18+ years of retail management experience and much longer in terms of customer service, yet have been unable for nearly two years to land an in-person interview for a part-time retail job or even a temporary seasonal position. I'm officially out of ideas as I've tweaked my resume and omitted any experiences past 10 years ago. It largely reeks of age discrimination but have been told good luck with that, despite having been rejected after my lone virtual interview for a larger retailer a couple days ago. Ideas or suggestions?

Have you tried or considered working for a retail consulting firm of some kind? I really don't know anything about this field but I've read articles over the years that mention firms that consult for retail industry. The ageism may still be an issue but I'd think they'd like having someone with your level of experience. Maybe Google "retail consulting firms" and see what comes up and if any of them are hiring? Although I don't know what your situation is about relocating for a job because they may not be where you live.

I would love to get my hands on whoever came up with the 10-year-rule!

Go over your resume with a fine toothed comb. Does it give details about metrics and achieving/exceeding them, head count, success stories, explanations for gaps, additional dties, ...?

Check formatting, font and spelling. Yes! Read it from the bottom up. Delete all profiles on job boards and start over with an email containing your name. Your profiles are probably stale and all you do is refresh them. Update your linkedIn profile and add it to your resume.

Each of us lives in a slightly different world.
But when my sales career ended suddenly at age 60 I became a trucker. Went to school and got a CDL license and went to work the week after. Made enough money to get us through and didn't have to move.
I am not saying you should become a trucker, even though it worked fine for me. I am saying you should consider going to a totally new direction.
I retired in 2010, right on time.

I feel for you, having been there myself. Age discrimination is rampant, and with today's algorhythms, they know immediately how old you are.

Does it have to be retail? Government jobs tend to be much less discriminating in their hiring practices, in my experience.

What about a retail position whose products cater mostly to older people?

This is very good...especially the part about looking for "clues". For example, certain phrases are code for "we prefer younger workers":

For example, "recent grads welcome" - why wouldn't they be? Why should they be recent?

I know someone in their late 40s who had a big unemployment gap & FINALLY, FINALLY, FINALLY got a seasonal retail job at a store this year. But it's set to end the end of Jan, so guess it's back on the hunt after that!

More of these companies need to have compassion & give people a chance!
