Time was you could control the references a prospective employer contacted because you provided them with a well-thought out list of colleagues and former bosses you knew would provide glowing recommendations.

If I ever had to look for a job, there is no friend I have on facebook that would not give me a good reference. And I have no friend on there I would not give a good reference to.

The whole idea of Facebook and MySpace is to network with others. You cannot do that when you are hidden from view. I have had good experiences with Facebook as old school classmates and others I knew have found me and wrote and we have hooked up again. Same here – although all of my friends have their pages on private – none of them have embarrassing headlines or pictures. I would have no problem listing any of them as a reference
