I am working a temporary job right now that will probably last for around 6 months. There is no hope for permanent employment here since I am only helping out while they change computer systems. They are happy with my job performance. Is this long enough to be able use them as a good reference?

In my opinion there is no set time, if you did a good job and are leaving on good terms your fine, and feel free to ask supervisors or co-workers if you can use them as a reference, worst they can say is no. I've had temporary assignments like yourself where I got some great references out of them.

Just to clarify, you are asking about listing colleagues/supervisors as references by name, correct?

Of course you should list the position itself on your resume as part of your experience, even if it's less than a year.

As to whether or not to list people, definitely ask first, but if the people you ask are willing to give you good references, then have no hesitation about including them. Oh, and if you are job-hunting again in another year or two and want to list them again, it's good etiquette to contact them again to let them know. I recently got a call out of the blue from someone asking me for a reference on someone I had supervised six years ago, and at least for me, it's embarassing to be caught offguard like that.

As a side note, one of the things my mother taught me was that any time I used someone as a reference (friend, colleague, supervisor, whatever), it is polite to send them a brief thank you note afterwards. I'm probably the only one in the world who still does things like that, but that's ok, I don't mind being the oddball. Been one all my life, in fact!

I believe it is about a year, that you have to know someone or work for some place before you can use them as a reference.
