But how do you sleep at night? How can you live with yourself? I doubt there is some hokus pokus man up there who will judge you but if there is he surely will send any collection people right to a burning hell. And with my approval.

Hocus pocus, POOF... and after the smoke clears, observe exactly who is in hell.

As far as debt collectors go, why shoot the messenger? Has any person who wasn't the victim of identity theft ever been called by a debt collector if that person never racked up any debt that he/she failed to pay? Debt collection companies actually buy debt accounts from other companies for pennies on the dollar, such that the rights to the accounts go to the debt collection companies. When a collector calls you, it's because you now owe that person's company the money.

Run up a debt, pay it off. It's that simple. Collectors are merely doing their jobs... which entail trying to make honest people out of deadbeats. I think deadbeats would be much more likely to be judged harshly if God actually judged people based upon what appear to be your rules.

I would hate being a debt collector. A few years ago, I got a job as a telemarketer and I quit that next day.

I did collections for years.

It can be the most stressful job you can imagine. You get called names you can't even spell, get threatened, lied to, cursed out, etc. You are typically rated based on your performance, so, you have to be on point. It is not an easy job, save for that you sit at a computer all day.

It can also be one of the most fun jobs you can have. As a natural born smart ass, I was really good at the job. It was hilarious to catch people in lies, or to fire back a witty retort to their idiotic rantings. You also learned a lot about people, good and bad. You could actually help people that were going through hard times, speak to interesting people. The job typically wasn't about harrassing, as that rarely works, and could get you fired quickly, it was more a "sales" job, selling people on making that payment.

I worked for an enourmous company that owns hundreds of store credit cards, and also makes airplane engines, owns a TV Network, etc.

It is interesting to note that, the typical person who was behind on one of our cards would be behind on 4-5 other ones on average. I would call people who had 20 of our cards, all with high balances.

Also, the money was pretty good. In the area I lived, there were no jobs, so, to get out of high school and get a job there starting off making $11 bucks an hour + bonuses was pretty good for the area back in 2000. I dated a girl that worked there, and she made nearly 50,000 a year doing it, with awesome benefits and perks. Have you ever won a brand new car at work? I know several people that did. And, I am not talking Kia Rios, I am talking about Mustang Convertibles, Mountaineers, Lincoln LS, etc. Have you ever been on a cruise with a friend paid for by work? People I worked with did.

And, for some of the other posters, I slept just fine at night. My job was to collect my companies money for them. Their job was to pay that money that they borrowed back, and, they failed at it. The majority of people I dealt with, even when I worked in a Hardship department, weren't behind because of job loss, they were behind because of their ignorance of money and finances.

Sweet talk doesn't mean a thing. Flying off the handle and or having patience does.

Is this commercial debt or personal debt.

Commercial debt takes way more tact...as you are trying to recover funds, but keep the customer. It's why companies top accounts are usually handled IN HOUSE for collection in their credit/collections/ar departments. I would never have a multi million dollar account outsourced, never.

Very strict laws on collections, collection techniques. Also completely different rules and guidelines for the two separate types.

Hiring someone who can "sweet talk" with no background could be dangerous.
