NEVER pay someone to find you a job. Get with a reputable temp agency and they'll do the same thing for free. I wouldn't pay $1 to an agency like that.

You're missing my point. Companies of the ilk that I mentioned make no offers to find you a new job. They may have some contacts and they may know who's hiring, but they're not calling the company on your behalf. What they do is update your job search, self-marketing, etc. skills. They also provide psychological testing (Myers-Briggs) to help identify what fields/jobs may fit your personality. And they provide tips and tools on effectively designing your job search, help with resume and cover letters as well as "coach" you on interviewing and negotiation.
Right Management, for example, has a seminar on how to effectively use Professional networking tools, like LinkedIn. They also have seminars for those who might be interested in going into business through franchising. These are ALL good things and, frankly, pretty valuable. So you're not paying them a retainer to find you a job. And, since they're not a job agency, they don't receive a referral fee from a company. Unlike the guy who's courting mike69.
Hence my advice to him, if you're willing to hand over the fees, check with Right Management and see what their program and fees look like. There's another company that is considered #1 with Right Mgt as #2, but I can't recall their name. If you're looking to get a retail job or restaurant work these places aren't for you unless you're looking at management positions.
And if that's not enough, I was just there today for an "interview" with Michael Baer. He's a big showman and a consummate slick talker. He'll flatter you a bit, assess your personality type and try to play on your emotions, ask you a few questions... but it's really just his sales pitch to hook you in for a second meeting at which he'll tell you how much cash he wants you to hand over. He's a crook.
Folks, I'm currently working with three reputable recruiting firms and an international outplacement services firm. NONE of these people ever ask for money, and NONE of them are so crazy as to make the big assurances of quick job placement, higher salary, etc. that AA-Careers makes.
Reputable recruiters DO NOT ask you for money. IF A "RECRUITER" TRIES TO HIT YOU UP FOR CASH, ***RUN*** THE OTHER WAY.
I don't like anything that wants money up front. The worst employment agency I would actually consider that Ive heard of here (southwest) took 50% -60% of your first months income. But if you can't get another job, it would be ok, assuming you didn't get fired after the first month. Agencies should find you work and take part of your pay (not necessarity 50% , but in the long run, it only depends what your wage needs to be). Id be wary of this company , OP.
sorry, maddog, but that is crazy!! i dont' want agencies taking part of my pay...!
here the agencies charge 24 dollars and i get paid 14 dollars!
basically they charge twice the salary for the actual employee!!
basically they charge twice what they are paying you. so if your salary is 20,then the agency gets 40 from the employer or if you get 40 then the agency gets 80 from the employer, which is still less than if they hired a permanent employee with a salary package!
Don't know about "Are Employment Agencies scams?", but do know that these Agencies sure have done a great job in convincing a lot of companies to let them do all the work for "hiring" employees. There are so many jobs out there today that are handled by Agencies that it is amazing......and I don't necessarily mean that in a "good way" either. As for myself, I'd much rather go directly thru a company for a job opening than go thru an Agency. Right now, my wife is on a 90 plus day Contract with an Agency. She does get medical benefits ($250 deductable though), but doesn't get paid for any time off (sick/PTO/Holidays).
And, the paperwork that an Agency has a new person fill out is totally amazing (credit check, BG check, questions about your family). Some of these questions can be very intimidating! As for me, I like the "old way" of interviewing/hiring. "old way" meaning, the way it was back in the 80's-90's!

I've found that often when working through an agency I've made more money than I would have as a f/t employee. This would be for short-term, not right-to-hire positions.
When I've been unemployed, I've been more than happy to work through an agency. It's better than collecting unemployment, and I've actually gotten a couple of jobs through networking while working temp. I don't begrudge the agencies their cut, they've got to make a living as well.
Yes, I have no problem with Agencies Annek. You are misreading the poster or my comment. I understood the poster to be asking if it is okay for agencies to take part of the workers check for the service of getting a job. I am strongly against this. Employers should pay, not the employees.
Whatever you get from the agency makes more, usu. if you get 20, the agency get 40, if you get 14, they get 28, if you get 40, they get 80,etc...!
Sometimes people post on a thread because they have something to add about the topic in general, not because they are replying directly to you or the poster before them.
please see above and yes, you, need to put those glasses on!
