Hi there,
My name is Metin from Turkiye. I am studying Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation at 9 Eylul University in Turkey. Also i studied economics at the same university.
I am going to New York or Seattle for the Summer, via work and travel program and i am looking for jobs. I have all the papers, visas and everything, so I'm all legal and above board. I will be in US between 23 june - 8 september. I will be staying with my brother in North Arlington
or will stay with my friend ni Tacoma, Seattle. I want to experience some American culture and life there. I am willing to work at basically anything. But mostly i would like to work for Starbucks(i always sympathy afetr watching the movie I am Sam) or for Kodak(photographer job in amusement parks..it seems fun)
Does anybody have any info on where to start? I have some experiment in Turkey..like working in McDonalds and selling things to tourists in summer places. and i also gave math lessons to middle school students.
I am in Turkey now. I guess these companies would prefer to get applies in person. May i be able to get offers online or i have to apply in person. Applying these kind of summer jobs in person after 20 June, is too late??

Welcome all the way. You will find people in the states far more friendly and nice then your govt tells you about. We are not like you hear. We are NOT bad people. Our govt is the bad people. You will also find many Americans are fasinated by accents as well as meeting other cultures. I sure am. Because our school system sucks here and dont teach very much about other cultures which may create the curiosity.
Anyhow I am so surprised any college would teach Physiotherapy in Turkey even though the practice comes from ancient Greece and Rome. But Turkey is so very different so why? We call it Chiropractor here. But Physiotherapy takes Chiropractic to a new level. Not only are manipulation of bones part of it but by non use of drugs and more on the herbal treatment with modern day safe natural methods.
You may not have a big market for that here yet aside from the super wealty parts like where movie stars hang out. It was only but 10 years or so ago that insurance started covering Chiropractor visits. Many Doctors still to this day call Chiropractors quack doctors.
Based on your poor spelling and grammar I fear you speak that way and that will hurt your chances at a job where you have to deal with people such as in Starbucks. But some people speak much better then they can write, if that is the case your chances of finding work are much easier.
Keep in mind America is in a pretty deep economic depression now. Some cities are only in a recession but whatever the case, jobs are very very very hard to find. So put yourself in an employers position were he gets 500 applications for his job posted (which is quiite common) and then one of those applicants are a non American. What would you do?

It sounds like you both may be right based on this Phsysiotherapist description in the U.K.

And yes, it depends on which city you live in, if foreign english is a plus. Some americans love a french, jamaican, african, japenese accented basic english, where other places people will just be impatient. So, in one place you will get all the girls or boys and in another you will not be very lucky.
I think touristy places, you should do well, as long as you understand better than you speak. For example, I worked in a French tea shop and people liked my basic American french. And people on vacation are much more relaxed then when they are not on vacation.

p.s. There are many people who are late in getting their summer jobs, ( i am one of them) and you may be late, but there is no harm in trying. You might also have to bunk with your co-workers. I know one student that just got hers last week, with a law firm in new york. I am applying for mine next week. May be too late, but i will try anyway! ;-))
I'm assuming you mean North Arlington in NJ, that would be a doable commute into NYC.
The problem is that you are arriving too late in the season for the types of jobs that you are looking for. Summer help will already have been hired at the shore spots and amusement parks--all of which are too far from North Arlington. That said, you might want to consult the Turkish Embassy in NYC and inquire with them. Tourism Contacts / Travel + Tourism | Turkish Honorary Consulate Michigan It's possible that they might want to hire you for the summer.
Event Imaging Solutions is the company that you'd need to apply to for theme park photography jobs. The problem is that North Arlington is too far to travel to Six Flags every day--it's got to be at least two hours each way factoring in traffic, and there's no mass transit to get there. Same thing with Dorney Park. Plus the would probably want you to start before you could.
Places like Starbucks don't want to hire just for the summer, they hire people who will be sticking around.

Are you a soothsayer or something like that?? How do you know my govt(i guess governmet) tells bad things about americans?? You should know that other countries’ governments has lots of things to do instead of telling bad things about americans to their citizens!
People are not narrow minded here like you to thing all citizens of a country should be judged for what their government does?! Being good or bad is not about being citizen of a country.. it is about personality, behaviour…and these things change person by person.. i am sure there are lots of good people there and bad ones also as my country and others has.

Greece was a state of Ottoman Empire(Turkish Empire) for 600 years. Maybe we had enough time share our knowledges together.
How could you become such an empty headed person? People are using boks, internet, universities are openned to foreigners in all countries and they are teaching everything. Human being is sharing knowledges.. Come on! We are in the 21tn century..
Have you ever suprised how could americans learn physiotherapy(=physical therapy) even they dont have any connection between Greeks?

“Work and Travel” is a cultural Exchange program for foreign university student. Students only need intermediate level of english. The program also offers students to improve their english level.

You should ask that question to american employers such as GAP, Six Flags, Hard Rock Cafe, Great Wolf Lodge, Tommy Hilfiger, Palace Entertaintment, Wet’n Wild, Carowinds, McDonalds, Sling Shot, Best Western, Days Inn & Suites, Wendy’s, Nascar Speedpark, King Island…. And much more.. why do they need to ask from sponsor companies (like CIEE) for work and travel students to hire for “2009 summer” even there are lots of unemployed americans there…

I know that dersert sun was rude, but I really don't think she intended to be. (I think it is just like when i was in France and people assumed i was brazilian or when people assume that all americans are of european ancestry or that all americans eat hamburgers and french fries and wear jeans, etc.. i could go on and on. But her comments were not meant to be hurtful, but were actually well intended, i think, even if they came off stereotypical and showed a lack of knowledge about the physio therapy field.) Also, A lot of people don't realize that there are jobs for foreign students, despite the lack of jobs for americans. It is just another niche. But it is understandable that the normal person would assume that there are no jobs for anyone, including foreign students.
And remember to focus on the people who gave you advice and their time and did not upset you.

FYI--many of those jobs at the resorts are houskeeping--cleaning toilets and changing beds all day. It's backbreaking work with minimal opportunities to meet people and improve language skills. Others are food service kitchen help--again not the summer job you think you'll be getting. Be very careful.
