Hi everyone...

I have rewritten my resume in hopes to draw better attention to it. I am a middle class worker who has been out of the real work force for about a year now. I was laid off 5/31/06, and prior to that I had a pretty shakey employment history because of layoffs left and right. I have written this in hopes that it will not highlight the fact that I haven't established myself at any particular position for a huge amount of time. I wish it were not this way, but there are some things I just dont' have control over. This past year we started our own business because the job market has been so tough.

What do you all think? (please forgive the format from copy/paste; I am using real bullets)

Also...

Relocating. My hubby and I will be relocating out of state. We will be going to an area that he has family members in, so chances are pretty darn good (99% good) we will be relocating. I have found many, many jobs I am interested in and qualified for, so that is a good start. First, how should I address the intention to move (without relocation benefits)? I do not want to give a bad vibe that we're relocating or the impression that I expect an employer to pay for my move - I certainly wouldn't turn down the offer, but I don't want that to bea reason to get turned down for a job. How should that be handled? How should that be communicated? Should I establish a PO Box in the area I'm going to give the impression I'm a local candidate?

All advice is appreciated.

Make sure you put in your email address and your house address and phone number. You need a cover page and a follow up page. You also need to send it by email/fax and hard copy. I have a current one if you want to follow it. I had to write it for my business writing class and of course, recieved an A on it. send me a message.

Make sure that you spell check!!! "Summary" is spelled incorrectly. Most employers will toss out a resume immediately if it has even 1-2 spelling errors... not fair but that's life.

I'd encourage you to complete your college education if you can. You might qualify for a job at a community or technical college (work study) with your excellent office skills and be able to work your way through school.

Once you make your move, consider that as an option and talk to an admissions counselor.

Bubba Girl,

HOW COULD YOU HAVE MISSPELLED 'SUMMARY'????

I don't have time to do a complete critique of your resume but I can see two things right away. Work on them while you clean up the trivia others have mentioned:

1. I don't see a title. Resume Readers need to know 'Who' and 'What' you are. This gives them a foundation for being able to assess your resume. By not giving yourself a title, you could be anything and say anything and nothing, as a consequence, matters. Give yourself a title so people can tie your subsequent conversations back to who and what you say you are all about.

2. Your 'Summary' is too long, it is wordy and all over the place. Create some focus, partly by using shorter, impacting sentences.

3. Regarding your Accomplishments and Experience-

3a. You are saying too much. If you 'did' something, say less about 'what' you did and say more about what you accomplished and what was the benefit (measurable benefit, whenever possible).

3b. You are including details that can easily be presumed by the nature of the job or work you did. Explaining the job by using job description details is unnecessary and old school. (Maintaining files and records can be presumed to be part of your job- there is no need to use up valuable resume real estate talking about stuff that is part of the every day routine of your job. Focus on what you did that was an improvement that became an advantage to your employer. Advantages have results/benefits and are in many cases, measurable. Go back, if necessary, and ask former peers and managers how much you improved systems, etc. and what those improvements were worth in dollars.)

That's all the time I have for this. If you want more input, it will have to wait until after Wednesday. Let me know if you want more time spent on this, now or after you edit your resume.

CHAOS,

NEVER SUGGEST SOMEONE INCLUDE THEIR HOUSE ADDRESS ON THEIR RESUME.

This is the age of the Stalker. House/Street addresses are no longer considered necessary information on a resume.

Name

Title

City, State, Zip

Telephone Number

Bubba G,

("Maintained customer and client relations with accurate communications for all parties."

Another example of something said that can be considered without value since after all, it is expected you would 'maintain' and be 'accurate'. Saying so is not a benefit, it is a given. Substitute these kinds of sentences with something that shows you made a difference. [Everyone in that stack of 500+ resumes is also saying they 'maintained' and were 'accurate'. What is the difference between you and they?]).

The reason you say less about the process and more about the result [of an accomplishment] is that you create questions when you do this. The Resume Reader will, hopefully, wonder 'how' you accomplished something and/or wonder about your metrics and will be more inclined to pick up the phone to ask you to explain and/or tell that person more about what you did. Overly describing the process leaves no questions in the mind of the Resume Reader and since you basically 'explained it all', there is less motivation to pick up the phone.

Even if your wordy resume gets you noticed and put into a call back stack, there is a danger that whomever that RR calls first may be the only person called in for an interview. They will not have gotten to you since you were put into a second stack.

The purpose of a resume is to trigger the RR into picking up the phone, not prioritizing you into another stack of this time, 30+ resumes.

By engaging the RR, you will cause a reaction. By telling a long story, you will bore that person.

What do you all think?

Bubba G,

One last thought as you re-think your resume:

Keep in mind it is no longer enough to have a resume that shows you to be 'qualified', it is necessary to show you are a 'best choice' by showing a competitive resume.

So keep that in mind as you re-write your doc.

Another thought I had when I first read your resume is that you might benefit from creating two or three versions, tailoring them according to any advertised jobs you see that interest you.
