How are you counting the interviews? 1 interview = 1 call or one day on-site? So far, for entry-level IT jobs, it's been a phone interview and 2-5 interviews on-site in the same day.
For me calling it the most steps is more applicable then interviews. You had to pass each step before going to the next and at the end of all steps you are put in the list of qualified applicants. Afterwards, they selected the most highly qualified applicants for the position. This was for a government job. It was highly competitive position with only 2% of total applicants offered a job.
In total there were 9 steps that takes anywhere from 8-12 months to complete. After which you are offered a conditional offer of employment IF your one of the best qualified applicant that passed all 9 steps. Luckily I was one of them.
I heard a federal position had 9 interviews, with still no results!
Sounds like a typical competitive government job (see my post from above). Most medium/high level government jobs follow this same pattern because they are much better in total compensation when compared to a public job of the same caliber. The government recognizes this. And when you combine that with the fact that there is an oversaturation of highly qualified applicants, they can afford to be picky.
Anything after 2, the company/organization can stick the interviews up their you-know-what. Anything after 2, they are either stringing someone along, getting free advice, or can't make a decision to save their lives, and you probably don't want to work there.
Depending on the type of job, you should take this 3rd interview to mean good progress... lol. Seriously. You are moving through the line and trust me.. not everyone does.
The most interviews I've had for a job were 5... it was ridiculous, but I got it then wound up quitting within 2 wks because it was super stressful and I didn't like it. lol
