Anybody wake up early to eat before the fast today? Wishing all of you who are fasting (Fast of Gedalia) an easy and meaningful fast.

My father, A"H, used to do this. I explained to him that he should be sure to set a t'nai (condition) the night before.

We set the t’nai the night before. Five of us fasted in my house today. My Rav holds that you have to say the words out loud (can’t just have in mind).

I used to not be able to eat before a daytime fast - it made me nauseous. But now it’s kinda standard. The key to a successful fast for me is start hydrating 2 days in advance, and morning of, drink a sports hydration drink (I prefer Body Armor). This morning I cooked up eggs for the whole crew. Broke my fast tonight with a plate of nachos. I’m a simple man. :-)

Fantastic article you linked above, Rosends. I had not previously heard any of those ideas around pas haba’ah before. But clearly there is who to hold by that it’s not required to start thirty minutes early when eating pas haba’ah. For sure you should if you plan to wash (which I never do before a fast).

Rosends, how do you hold by caffeine pills? My Rav allows, but only to avoid a headache, not to heal one.

In terms of whether they should be treated as medicine (like a prescription) or a remedy? I avoid the issue. I rarely have caffeine (other than in chocolate) so that it isn't an issue.

Also, I'm a protein loader -- a couple of rotisserie chickens and some high fiber wraps, plus a lot of water and I'm usually ok.

I keep wondering how a fast works. When Moses went went up into the mount for 40 days, he fasted 40 days and the way its written suggests he didnt eat or drink water for 40 days but I doubt that is the case. I dont know.
