Anyways, I was just free form getting some of my thoughts out in this post. But for people who have converted, or are on the journey to conversion, I can only imagine how life changing this must be, and I admire and respect the effort required to become a Jew by choice.
Yes. It's like swimming upstream against the tide most days. I would never recommend someone convert and then move away from their community, and then join a new shul that is 35 miles away from home. The love of Hashem and His people keep us going when it seems almost impossible.
On an added side note, I learned today that the Chabad site has lovely videos and classes by Rabbis on various things. I was learning everything I could today. I'm going to hang out there more.
When we move, a nearby Jewish community will be a primary consideration in our relocation.
I could get all sappy and tell you how much I respect you (I shall not use the word "adore") but you already know that. We have a lot of great posters here that I learn so much from - you, JB and others. Thank you.
Hi theflipflop, can you please explain the meaning of hashkafos (Jewish outlook) and yushke, and why a convertee must give that up? Thanks
Happy to. A hashkafo is the overall summation of how a Jew views the world, through their "Jewish lenses.". If a Jew has total respect for the Torah as being the direct words from G-d, and then lives their life accordingly, that's an hashkafo (and a food one). If a Jew believes the Torah is just a nice man written collection if moral stories, well then he is incorrect, but that would lead to a different hashkafo. Ones actions are entirely directed by their hashkafo.
Yushke is just another name for Jesus. That guy has no place in the life of a Jew. If a Jew is to start believing that Yushke was anything more than just a lousy Jew who led many Jews away from the Torah, then that Jew is to be distanced from our people, as such thought has no place in Judaism.
If a believer in Yushke wants to convert to Judaism, there is not a Jewish court in the world that will approve that conversion until they are 100% certain that person has placed their belief in Yushke into the trash bin. Should the Jewish court learn at a later date that convert still believes in Yushke, then the conversion is nullified retroactively and that person is shunned from the Jewish people.
Not sure I have any general thoughts. Do you have a more specific question?
What are your thoughts on the Lubavitch naming Schneerson as the Mashiach (Messiah)? Why are they not considered Messianic? Why is it ok for them to hang his photo as commonly as Christians hang portraits of yuske?

They seem very interesting and willing to share information. I think they are driven to outreach. Is the information they promulgate outside of normative Modern Orthodox Judaism? It seems like good, solid information to me. I aspire, in about 10 years, to be an accepted member of Modern Orthodoxy. Don't laugh!
