I continually read about someone being "jewish." What does this truly mean? I am an American, but can practice the "jewish" faith. So, If I convert to Judism, does that automatically make my children "jews?"
It seems people are relating being "jewish" as a race of people. Is not a religion? There are people in Israel, for example, which are Christian's and Muslim. Yet, they are Israeli's.
So, what is the answer? Is it a race or a religion?
Technically, you can't even say it's a single race. There are Semitic Jews from around Palestine, but there are formerly Turkic Jews who are the descendants of the Khazars, who inhabited the Russian Steppes. What unites them all is their history as practicing Jews, whether the current generation practices the faith or not.

Education in this country must be worse than I thought. Hebrew is a race. Most Hebrews (though not all) are Jews (Judaism is a religion).

So I agree with MrRational: "yes".
Judaism is a religion. Christ was a Jew, and a Hebrew. Hebrew is a race.
Anyone can be a Jew, if they wish to convert. Just as anyone can become a "believer" and be a Christian.
The early Christians were Hebrews (and Jews). They were called Christian because they followed Christ, and believed He was who He said He was (God). I can tell you probalby don't believe, or your comments would have revealied your faith. Your comments reveal that you are like so many others; confused and unbelieving. I'm so sorry.

My response was anthropological, not religious. "Jewish" is considered an ethnicity in Russia, and refers to descendants of the Khazars.

They are not "Jews" by ethnicity... The Khazars are converted Jews as ordered by the king of Khazaria to convert to the Jewish faith in 740 A.D. Approximately 90% of people in the world today who call themselves Jews are actually Khazars, or as they like to be known, Ashkenazi Jews... They are not Hebrews nor "actual" Jews...

Yes, I know that. Khazar descendants are Jews. However, many of them aren't practicing Jews, so they're not Jews by a religious definition, but by virtue of their Khazar ancestry. I know several who don't practice the faith but consider themselves Jews and Khazar descendants. If you're defining Ashkenazi Jews as Khazars (as do I. and as many of them do, themselves), then you're defining them as an ethnicity. The Khazars were an ethnic group.

Khazars are not Jews by ethnicity... Thier actual homeland is Georgia... Khazars or Ashkenazis are converted Jews by religion only... They are not Hebrews nor are they "actual" Jews...

But you said they were Ashkenazi Jews. So please clarify what you mean by Ashkenazi Jews and "actual" Jews.
