I'm interested in a Tanakh with English, Hebrew, and some commentary in English. Does anyone have a favorite? I currently have one, but it's "just" the Tanakh with English and Hebrew. I want to study, though, and would love a wise person's commentary on it.
I've been looking for a new one as well. I had a Jewish Study Bible (just English and comments, no Hebrew), but recently gave it a co-worker who likes to discuss religion with me. I also have a Hertz Chumash, but the English is extremely dated.
Thank you both! I had the Stone edition when I first became interested; someone borrowed it from the temple when I left it behind inadvertently a few years back. It's wrapped in plastic at Barnes and Noble so I couldn't see inside it. Will purchase it again and hang onto it.
Why do you davka need a Tanakh? The Chumash seems to be where the bulk of commentary is. There are many classic commentaries by Rashi, Ramban, and Sforno.
The Artscroll Stone Edition is great -- particularly the Chumash which has tons of commentary. You may be able to find it in paperback (less money) -- and at various online sources it may be on sale at any given time.
The wonderful Chumash translation by R' Aryeh Kaplan (Z"L) is also available online free -- he has great footnotes. You can find it in English, Russian, and Spanish at Navigating the Bible II They also have the Haftarah with trope and Divrei Torah, too.
