You may also find Eleazar Ben-Yair to be an interesting character in Jewish history. He was the leader at Masada at the time the Romans attacked the Jews living in the fortress committed mass suicide rather than be captured and made into slaves. Secular Israeli's in particular, from what I understand, are fascinated by this guy.

And for the other side of the story, read "The Jewish War" by Flavius Josephus who was Jewish. I tend to believe Flavius Josephus.
