Impossible. Orthodox synagogues all operate the same way and none sell tickets. You just walk in and pull up a chair. The only flak you might get is if you take someone's chair/place, in which case you wait for everyone to be seated and then find a spot.
Actually it did happen and he was turned away! Since there are quite few synagogues in the area, he was able to go to a few until he finally found the Uzbek Jewish one that let him in. He told me his impression of this smaller synagogue that everyone knew each other and perhaps immigrated together from same former USSR community.
I've never once seen an Orthodox shul deny a Yid admittance during the Yomin Noraim (Rosh Hashana until Simchas Torah). I would be suspect of your father's story. Sorry.
I happen to know that it is a true story. These synagogues had hired security people (which the assumption is that they were non-Jewish) and they refused entry to anyone who didn't have a ticket (like my father). Obviously he didn't make scene and ask to see some supervisor as the prayer services had already started and instead he decided to try other synagogues since there are quite a few in the area.
Chava, the part of the story that's suspect is that he was at an Orthodix shul when he was turned away. Those probably were not Orthodox shuls. I don't suspect that he was turned away - many synagogues in the US would do such a thing. Lots of examples in this thread already.

Again since he told me which synagogues at the time and I know them to be Orthodox synagogues (as that is type synagogue he wanted to go to) I know this is a fact whether you believe it or not.

Did you encourage your father next time not to travel during the Yamim Noraim without pre-arranged plans where he was going to daven? He he - not really, that wouldn't be kibud av.
I've never ever heard of "Uzbek"~? What denominations is it~? Like does it fall under the Reform, Conservative or Orthodox~?
"Uzbek" is an ethnicity; they were immigrants from Uzbekistan in central Asia. I have no idea what their religious traditions are like, but my impression is that Reform and Conservative are primarily American groups, not likely to be found in former Soviet republics like Uzbekistan.

This was a few years ago and usually he travels to the United Kingdom for the High Holidays. But that particular year he decided to go to a conference in Oklahoma that happened to be just after Rosh Hashana. So he decided to spend Rosh Hashana on the way there in NYC and I guess it never occurred to him that he wouldn't be able to daven at a local synagogue without pre-arranged plans as he has had done in other parts of the world years ago. (BTW, my father hasn't lived in the USA for the last 25 years at least.)
