Interesting discussion this morning at shul. Our Shacharis minyan (morning prayers) starts at 6:40am every weekday. I try to never miss. Well this morning, my alarm failed to go off. I awoke on my own at 6:34am. Within a few seconds of waking, my first thought of the day was "there's no way i can get up, dressed and to shul before Baruch Hu (the drop dead last time I could arrive and still count towards the minyan)." So I rolled over to go back to sleep. Then I thought of the men in my tiny shul having 9 this morning, and I dragged myself out of bed, significantly altered my routine, and made it to shul with plenty of time to spare.

After davening, when I explained to the guys why I was so late, and interesting idea was offered: Could it be, that the yatzer hara (the evil inclination), specifically woke me up at that exact time, in order that I would "choose" to roll over and go back to sleep. A test, so to speak, to see if my going to davening every morning was by rote or well-earned routine. Had i failed the test., the yatzer hara would begin to get a toe-hold into my davening routine, which "he" finds to be a real bummer. "He" calculated that at that exact time, I could make to shul in enough time, but if I chose to go back to sleep, then I would be held accountable in the heavenly court. I dunno. I hope I passed the test!

Alarm clocks? Who needed a alarm clock when Ema or Safta would walk into the room at around 0530, open the windows and take the blanket away. Even now with or without daylight saving time, I go into awake mode at 0430.

also i have read that towns had someone who would walk through the neighborhood and bang on each door to wake people up to go daven.
occasionally they would see through a lit window someone studying with Eliyahu ha Navi.

Since the advent of the printed siddur and the dissemination of customs of kabbalists in Tsfat etc. the Jewish shacharis has inflated tremendously from what is required by Chazal, namely morning brachot, the brachot and Shma, and Shmona Esreh. And there is no actual requirement to run to shul every morning anyway. The original requirement was simply the reading of Torah portions in public and to study Torah in a Beit Midrash, which was where the chachamim would orally teach Torah. Of course there is also no actual Torah obligation or gezeyra of Chazal to wear tefillin every single day either. So in the 21st century thinking Jews should be considering how to organize their time in compliance with the requirements of Chazal. Nowadays people often want to be more frum than Rabbi Akiva or even Moshe Rabbenu......
