Yes, that's it, Lillie. I didn't know that Da Ponte came from a Jewish family. After I saw the documentary, I did some additional reading from Charles Rosen, Mozart's biographer.
That of course would be the ideal and most Jews, except certain Chasidic sects are in accord. The problem is that humans have a certain tribal instinct, whether that tribalism, i.e. differentiation among people is based upon skin color, religion, language or other categories. In other words religious doctrinal issues are not the only causes of group hatreds.
::Sigh:: Anti-Semitism, Anti-Catholicism, Anti-Protestantism, Anti-Islam, or any other Anti-"whatever" religion are abhorrent evils of human vanity and hubris. There is ONE God, period! The emphasis on competing and even fatally antagonistic religions and religious dogma is extremely depressing to me and should be to any decent human being, IMO.
I simply do not believe that God cares one whit why we believe in Him or what we believe about Him, but He definitely cares about what we THINK He wants from us. Sad to say, my experience of God suggests we have been wrong about all of that from the earliest beginnings of belief in God and there seems no end in sight.
There is little doubt in my mind that God wants us to develop self-discipline and control over our selfish animal drives as the way to strengthen and develop our Spirit and get closer to God. The obedience meme is dominant in all religions as the way to develop that control. Unfortunately, the motivation has been and still is fear of God, and the myriad beliefs about the standards of what to control, why, and when are all over the map.
My encounter revealed a higher purpose and motivation for the actual standards that are completely devoid of fear, largely self-determinant, and completely self-regulating - agape love of God and each other. Such love eliminates any and all concerns over doctrine, dogma, and prohibitions because the states of mind associated with agape love automatically proscribe behaviors IF we actually give sincere consideration to their negative impact on everyone involved.
Sorry for the rant, but the intransigence of religious bigotry is inexorably benighted and inexcusable, IMO.
