As the days get shorter, Jews around the Poconos anxiously anticipate the sundown on Tuesday marking the first night of Hanukkah, and the start of eight days of celebration known as the Festival of the Lights.

Every year around late November and December, Jewish people around the world celebrate Hanukkah, which begins on the 25th day of the Hebrew month of Kislev. The starting date on the Western calendar varies from year to year.

I'm so ready. My school is having a debate on Thursday between two of our most esteemed Near Eastern and Judaic Studies professors on which is better: latkes or hamentashen. My bets on the latkes and I'll certainly be singing a blessing over the candles for that!

LOL... my first instinct is to vote for latkes, but nothing beats my grandma's homemade cherry & apricot hamentashen! Happy early Chanukah to those who celebrate, and I look forward to lighting the candles this evening.
