So I was watching housing hunters or some show like that last night and they were doing an episode in OP. They kept saying that OP was a suburb of KCK. Not that it matters as many people outside of KC group the entire KS side as "KCK". But it sounded so weird and odd as you just never hear that, or at least I don't. It's like when you hear KCK called Kansas City, without the K or Kansas. It just sounds weird as I have never called KCK simply "Kansas City" and have never heard others do it, but you will see or hear it in national media, shows like cops etc.

I would even consider Shawnee a suburb of KCMO rather than KCK and possibly even places like Bonner Springs, I don't know, it gets more gray there because I tend to think KCK functions more like a suburb than a secondary city in most cases.

Anyway. Just a thought.

It just shows the ignorance of the TV producers/writers when they are outside of their home region.

It's a suburb of both of them. Flight occurred from both KCK and KCMO to OP. Probably more in numbers from KCMO because it was bigger, but people did leave KCK to move to OP.

Yea, but I don't think flight alone is how you define a suburb. If that were the case than Lee's Summit should be a suburb of Raytown since it's almost exactly the same scenario. LS has probably gained as many residents from Raytown as KCMO.

I happen to think that the core city where the majority of the culture, attractions, and the most dense employment centers would be the city any area would identify themselves with as a suburb to. There are no massive traffic jams from OP to downtown KCK and KCK generally functions as a suburb itself despite having some urban history and characteristics.

I googled it and found that this is not really all that uncommon though. Many people, even locals and local businesses identify Overland Park as a suburb of KCK. Like I said, on a grand scale, it doesn't really matter, it just sounds weird when people say it.

This. When people from anywhere else talk about Kansas City, they're simply not talking about KCK -- there's nothing there to talk about! A city should be the metro's cultural, financial and employment hub, and that's simply not Kansas City, Kansas.

Growing up in St. Louis I didn't even know there was a Kansas City, KS until I was in high school.

What I find odd is the amount of obsessive thought that you put into stuff like this.

Seriously, who cares? ... Do you really expect the producers of a show like Cops or Househunters (or the majority of their audience) to care?

I have been in KC for 6 years and my mom still thinks i live in Kansas. It just goes to show you that people are pretty dumb when it comes to Geography.

Maybe KCMO needs to change it's name or something, a la Bombay - Mumbai

I would consider everything a suburb of KCMO

Just think if Oklahoma City was in Texas, would people really think it was in Texas, I highly doubt it.

Ok, what of KCK is world-class (or even regional class?) I didn't move here with some pre-conceived notion about KCK, but I've explored it, and there's simply nothing there.

I would happily explore again were there something worth going to. So I hope somebody can point out some examples and prove me wrong! In this case, I'd love nothing better.

Also -- never once have I called you elitist. That's all I can be held accountable for.
