No mention is made in the 1920 History of Jackson County.
Pearl Wilcox doesn't list Orchard City in the index of either of her books. A quick scan of the section titles fails to find any orchard. The mystery deepens!

Later the city de-annexed the area. I have a copy of the Star from maybe 1963 around here somewhere. I wrote the letter.

There was a photo posted within the last couple years which shows the city limit lines to the Missouri River.
Did you know that in 1962 there was a Gilpin Town Extension Club? According to The Examiner of November 26, 1962, that group was meeting, with a report on family relations and the Dial-A-Dietician program.

What major local event on November 26, 1962 warranted eight pages of coverage in that day's Examiner?

I cannot imagine what could get eight pages, but it might have been the opening of the Central Missouri State College building near the Truman Library.

Great guess! CMSC did open around that time, and was featured in several stories, but that isn't it. You are thinking in the correct category...

Yup, apparently it was a very big deal! Not only did they have eight pages for opening day, but there were also follow-up stories on the days before and after.

To officially open the plant they did not perform a ribbon-cutting. What was done instead?

Rather than a ribbon cutting to open the new Lipton plant they did something more appropriate. Consider what was manufactured in the new plant, and there you will find your answer!
