What else?

Doutt's Lake? Should we count that? Sure, why not?

Thoughts? Memories? Near-drownings?

Natatorium: there as a VERY tiny tot.
Sugar Creek: (barely) learned to swim there.
Cool Crest: did lots of "sight seeing" there as a teen.

We lived in Fairmount through my 3rd grade year. At that time Rost had become Browning Chevrolet. Jerry's Restaurant was still going strong, but I don't think I was ever in it. Western Auto had arrived on the north side. Fairmount Cleaners survived for many years.

About half of them. Jerry's fer shure. I think Jerry's might have been a bowling sponsor adult league(s)

IC Appliances
F Drive In
SHEPARD's? That's a new one, but sounds vaguely familiar
Rost
Standard Bank

Probably patronized Jerry's and the Drive-In

And seeing where Fairmount was/is, US 24 IA, we would have driven thru there hundreds of times on the way to NE Athletic Fields, so I imagine most if not all of those businesses were once in my regular line of sight.

Altho 1956 was five years before that commute started

What are the approx boundaries of Fairmount?

Englewood?

Maywood?

Ok, let's update to 1963, a time all of us can ID with

Most were there except:

Reynold's Barber is now RED's

Steenrod is now Forlow & Warner, Insurance & Notary....likely BK and & Tax also . . . maybe

F Home & Auto is either renamed or replace with F WESTERN AUTO

Dr Williams is now F CHIROPRACTOR

Shepard Sporting Goods is at 10225

Blodgett's has moved to 10503 (Willow intersects) Is that on or about . .. or outside "Fairmount"? Replaced the Drive-In (Nu-Way)

It looks like the first business with "F" in its name begins at Cedar. F TV and Radio Service

Next to it is the Heart of America RR Museum. I know we have some RR Enthusiasts here, so fill me/us in, please I had not heard of this (or recall it, Alzheimer's!)

10054 WILSON is now Wally's Market, with the Post Office next door

Others:

TG&Y 10301 at Ash

Save More Drugs Inc.... 10237 next door, at Ash

And who can forget the CALICO CAT Tavern which has been around for decades !

Charlie's Market near Jerry's Didn't our friend WCHS work there (or successor) or mention it otherwise?

Jerry's had an annex nicked the Riviera Room 10209

The Little Dixie Tavern next door at 10211

And lastly, how bout Lawyer and Career Politician Jack E GANT who officed at 10220?

Now I'm confused (ok, so what else is new?)

I see Sterling Lanes at 11216 IA

But when I Google that address (to walk from there thru Fairmount) it comes up where Winner dumps into IA

Near that multi floor Army building Which I believe we've talked about here before. Something like it processed the belongings of our WW2 heroes who didn't come home

Btw, HAPPY V-J Day last week. I spent some time researching The Kissing Sailor Story, my second most cherished photo from the War. The story of how the couple was narrowed down to be ID is a good read for anyone interested.

DT KC also had its impromptu mass celebration. There are photos online of shots along 12th St. from Main west and from Wyandotte or so east. A mini Times Square celebration. The Muehlebach, The Phillips, Katz on the corner.

I think the RR museum became Smoky Hill Railroad, which is now The Belton, Grandview and Kansas City Railroad. Via Wikipedia: The Belton, Grandview and Kansas City Railroad is short line passenger railroad and museum located in Belton, Missouri. It operates as a heritage railroad, on what was once the St. Louis and San Francisco Railway, on the Kansas City to Springfield branch.

They used to have a fairly decent passenger ride, but (as I understand it) had to pull up and sell a lot of rail to make $$$ ends meet.

A little more on the RR museum:

The Kansas City Railroad Museum was a museum located in Kansas City, Missouri. It was operated by the Smoky Hill Railway and Historical Society. Founded in 1964, the museum was initially located at Trough-Nichols siding in Lenexa, Kansas followed by the "house track" in downtown Lenexa, Kansas until 1973. Expansion forced them to move north of downtown Kansas City, Missouri, at 226 West 3rd Street to the Kansas City Southern "old team track" in the River Quay area. They were forced to move to Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base and five other locations in October 1980. They moved again to Belton, Missouri, about 1995 where they started operations with reporting marks SHRX. Later, they changed the name to Belton, Grandview and Kansas City Railroad.
As of July 2013, the museum roster included 2 static steam locomotives, 1 diesel locomotives, 6 freight cars, 3 cabooses, 6 special service (maintenance of way) cars, and 3 passenger cars. Among the more notable acquisitions included:
