The one thing I remember about Stephenson's was the low ceilings. The Big Biscuit has expanded to Raymore.

A bit of trivia for a lazy Sunday afternoon from The Examiner of February 6, 1947-

The Chamber of Commerce Board met last night and voted to hold another Santa-Cali-Gon this year. Plans were made to appoint a group of board members and special events committee to work on the event. Raymond E Blake, chairman of the special events committee, met with the board and presented plans and a suggested budget.

I looked up the menu for The Big Biscuit online, and it looks to be right up my alley. Next time I am in town to visit the fam I will have to check it out.

One place that I really love and visit every time I am back home as its about 8 blocks from my Uncle's place in Sugar Creek (and most importantly, isn't near the whole 39th street/Bass Pro mess) is called "A little BBQ Joint" on 24 Highway.

Total hole in the wall, but the BBQ is outstanding. Ribs in particular.

Fields was on the northeast corner of Truman and Noland Road.

I really think Fields had to relocate slightly because the widening of Noland Road needed the front part of their store.

After rebuilding they were still on the northeast corner of the same intersection.

I don't think I ever learned the name of the junk yard but their business required them to have a large crane of some type that towered over the landscape and was used to move junk from one place to another. I cannot recall whether the crane had a magnetic end or a claw end.
The junk yard was A. Markus and Son (My father wad the son, Milton Markus.) The crane had a magnet and eventually they had two cranes.

Welcome JMarkus! Please stick around and share your memories of old Independence. Do you have any photos of Markus & Son Salvage?

There was also a short stub track which ran down to the junk yard where the railroad would set out a gondola car to be filled with scrap metal.

I wasn't aware of such a rail spur. Did it come from the Airline or the MOPAC?

It ran down the north side of the depot and came off the GM&O
