In case y'all didn't catch on, this is the back corner of the building thoroughly discussed a few pages back. Yup, the one on the NE corner of Maple & Osage.

Thanks for sharing Weimlover.

Number 12 Sanborn Map, August 1916.

Triple railroad tracks went across Noland and Walnut where single tracks cross now.

Noland heading south ended at Walnut in a residential area. Noland continued on south a block later at Short Street.

A vehicle bridge went over the RR tracks on south Lynn between Walnut and Short. Today Lynn ends on either side of the tracks.

Number 13 Sanborn Map, August 1916.

Noland School on south Liberty is identified as Norland School.

A block south of Pacific street on Main is Victor Street. Victor appears to have become Rubey or Ruby Street. A block south of Victor was Rubey Street, which appears to have been renamed Linden.

Columbia School in 300 block of south Pacific.

West Maple jogs into and becomes West Lexington, while Electric follows the southwesterly route of present day Lexington.

That may be one of the few streets in the immediate area of the square that I have not driven on. I will have to check it out next time I am in town. Washington takes up again around 42nd Street and heads south to Highway 40. I was on that stretch of Washington on my last trip.

Delorme Maps shows the old town of Atherton as being in Independence city limits. I dont believe it is, though--is it? If it is there is another Washington Street in that area.

He subdivided it and named one of the streets for himself. In 1951 new street signs were made which misspelled his name, but Mayor Sermon told them not to correct it.
Roger T. Sherman was mayor of Independence for 24 years. He was sponsored by the Eastern Jackson County Democratic machine, which helped insure he was in power that long. This was the same machine that supported Judge Truman.

That machine was corrupt and was initially booted out of power in Independence in 1962 when citizens elected Good Government League candidates who took over half of the EJC Democratic city council positions. This happened even though the city, as was its custom back then, sent its employees out door-to-door to campaign for the Democratic candidates.

Four years later the GGL swept most of the rest of the city offices but somehow the EJC machine supported mayor was able to get elected--a fellow by the name of Slusher, who sold shoes in town.

I might add that Harry Truman spoke out publicly against the GGL and their vision of fairness and a city charter, but citizens still voted them into office.

Twenty-four years is way to long for any politician to be in power, whether Democratic or Republican.

Number 6 Sanborn Map, August 1916.

The Independence High School is shown at Pleasant and Maple but fronting on Maple. vs the old Independence Palmer Junior High being on the opposite end of the block toward Truman.

A dwelling is shown where the Truman Memorial Building is at today. Several dwellings are at the location of the parking lot for the Memorial Building.

The building at 215 N. Main is identified as "moving pictures," which would be the Electric theater.

A garage with a capacity of fifty cars is at 119 S Liberty.

A house is on N. Main across from the the fire station.
