I've been "ready" for quite awhile now since I'm in typical Elephino mode. MAD? WCHS (MIA) ? The tension is killing me!

This is located a couple hundred yards south of 24 hiway, and just to the west of the driveway to McCune Home. My understanding is that this was used during the civil war as a prison of sorts. Who's side is unknown. I'm hoping to dig up more info, and take pics of my own at a later date.

Wow, I've never known it was there. The only time I went to McCune Home it was dark, so I wouldn't have seen this. I wonder if this is part of the property a local Civil War group is trying to protect. The Little Blue Expressway is under construction just west of this. (best view of that on Google Maps if you don't zoom in too close)

For those not familiar follow this link for the best view. Rotate around the compass and/or zoom out to see where it is hiding.

Bing Maps - Driving Directions, Traffic and Road Conditions

P.S. to Silver Doc, I'm pretty sure McCune is now closed or will be closing. If it is still open beware that they may not like strangers traipsing about in their woods.

As I've said Mad, I've traveled past this area too many times to count over the years, and never knew there was anything like this around! I downloaded the photos I posted, from another site, and don't know how the photographer even found this, or where he got his info. Your link to Bing Maps gives a great view of the site, better than the one I got when I went to Google Maps, because the foliage obscured the ground detail. Google Earth used to show aerial views taken in the late fall or winter, so you could see more detail through the trees.

I planned on checking with the "powers that be" before playing "Dora the Explorer", but thanks for the heads up. Sure would like to check it out! If you would, please let us know if you hear anything else about the group that may be trying to protect it.

This is the group working on preservation of the Battlefield. I don't know if the structure you found is included in their plans.

Studying the Missouri-Kansas Border War and Beyond

I've contacted this group, and the treasurer that replied said "I am not familiar with a possible prison near the McCune Home, but I am forwarding your inquiry to three of our Civil War historians. If anyone has information for Dave, please "Reply All" so that we will know what you have said."

Also, I found this on their website and this is probably what you were referring to:

The Sonny Wells Little Blue Battlefield Memorial Commision - A subsidiary Commission organized for the purpose of receiving and maintaining all real estate and monies of the Little Blue Battlefield and its memorials, setting goals, raising funds and any other purposes lawfully identified, in order to preserve the Little Blue Battlefield, located at and near the Little Blue River and U.S. Highway 24 in eastern Jackson County, Missouri.

I'm thinking of attending one of their meetings at some point. It could prove to be interesting!
