Speaking of Lake City, which is on the east edge of the Independence city limits:

During the early 60s, I took a young lady home after dark from some kind of function. She lived on the Lake City reservation as her father was military and might have been the post commander. She asked me to drop her off at a lonely unmanned gate on Truman Road just east of M-7.

I did not even know the gate was there. I was rather concerned but she said she would be fine. I stayed parked with my lights on and saw her insert a key into a lock on the large gate spanning the road. The gate electrically opened and she walked on the road through the gate and then used the key to close the gate behind her. I saw no lights but she said had said she lived down the road not too far. I stayed parked until I could no longer see her and then left hoping she would be okay.

If one views the reservation with Google, there is a family housing area a short(?) distance from that gate.

That may be Independence High School at Maple and Pleasant? For some reason, though, no storm drain on this corner.

I found out that my GF's birthplace is listed as "Lake City, Mo" Which sorta surprised me as I didn't know that was a recognized "place of birth"

I believe my Mom worked there during WWII, yet that doesn't surprise me as she was a Rosey The Riveter "We Can Do It" type patriot

Well, the little town of Lake City was just a stone's throw to the north of the reservation on Owens School Road and Heidelberger Road. If your grandfather was born before 1940 he would have to have been born in the town or close to it. The ammunition plant came along that year.
