Interesting, MRG.

Also during Truman's reign, the Army lost its Air Force (for the first time) to an independent air service and the Department of Defense was organized plus Truman integrated the armed forces.

The second time the Army lost its "air force" was during Vietnam when the Air Force started complaining about all the fixed wing aircraft the Army was accumulating such as the Caribou and the Mohawk flown by Army officers. Apparently, they did not care about all the helicopters.

Both the Air Force and Army still have a navy though. The Army operates a number of ships in addition to a flotilla of various landing craft.

The Air Force has fifteen or so ships operating out of a port at Tyndall AFB, Florida the last I heard.

When I was in the Army, it was still running locomotives and trains and apparently it still does.

An Army ship launched in 2003:

The only old recollection I have is that the first business to go in onto that corner was a Holiday Inn Motel. $5 a night and that was expensive.
