We shall start the week with an easy quiz. The 1960s saw tremendous growth in new homes, with subdivisions popping up all over. Your assignment this morning is to identify this one...

Kentucky Hills?

Here is another of the many famous Independence street problems:

In this view of Kentucky Hills note the designation of the streets as 37th N, 38th N, and 39th N. Then to the east note 12th Terrace N. in line with 37th N.

Another item of note is that the first block of 12th Terrace N. east of Liberty Street is west considering that Main is the east-west grid start at Independence Square.

1942- Kirby Bowl (also showed Diamond Bowl at 209 N Osage, in both the name section and the street listings, which must have been an error)
1946- (the next Polk's they have) 607 W Lexington is vacant, thus Kirby Bowl had a rather short life. Diamond Bowl is now correctly listed as 209 N Spring.
1948- 515-609 W Lexington is Moody's Motors
Skip ahead to 1965, Moody's is still there.
1967 (no book for 1966) Jerry Hay's Ford has taken over that location.
1968- The Lexington location is now vacant, Jerry Hay's Ford has moved to Noland Road
Hi guys!

I can provide the answer for 1966. I arrived back in Independence in June of 1966. During my two week leave from the Army, I bought a 1966 Mustang from Jerry Hays Ford at the Lexington location.

How long did you have it and what did you trade it in on?

The Mustang came out as a 1964 1/2 model and they are still listed as such. The companies were not used to releasing cars at mid-year back then.

My sister had one of the first. I am not sure what she did with it.

I have always believed that if a company could license manufacture of the original Mustang from Ford, they might have a best seller. Such as Glassic did with the 1931 Ford. That company manufactured those 1931 Fords for 16 years around the 70s, 80s time frame.

Think about how much you paid for it, and how much it would be worth today if'n you took decent care of it!

Today's quiz is a before and after. First is a view from 1957.

Next is that same area just a few years later, in 1963.

Your assignment is to identify the four streets that outline this area of Independence.

On one of those four corners of the four streets outlined there was once an Office Max.

How's about Noland on the west, 35th on the north, Phelps on the east and 39th on the south. I'm basing this on the similar appearance of what is today E. 37th running west to east in the '63 photo.
