I just read an article on the Examiner online that mentions this place as being a grocery store until 1943 at least.

I'll check older directories the next time I'm at the library.
As promised I have checked the directories. The 1911 directory did not have a grocery at that address. I can't tell if the address existed as that book did not give a street directory.

The next available directory is 1924, which has the Louis Smith Grocery at 914 W College. That listing remained unchanged until the 1938 issue, when it became the Paul Smith Grocery.

No 1939 directory, in 1940 it has changed to Thomas Grocery. 1941 skipped, 1942 has it as Bradley Grocery. In 1950 it became the Bradley Delicatessen, with a new neighbor, 908 W College listed for the first time, and occupied by Bradley Super Market.

In 1954 both addresses were vacant. 1956 brought the K&S Buy Way Market to 908, with 914 vacant until 1957 when a beauty shop opened. 1960 brought the addition of a barber shop with the beauty shop.

1962 found both addresses vacant again. 1963 featured the resurrected Bradley Market with Sloan Chemical next door.

In 1967 it became the King Bee Market at 908, with 914 vacant again. By 1968 the market was replaced by the Trinity Baptist Church. 914 found an occupant in 1969 with Jamco Drywall Contracting, which was gone by 1970.

In 1971 Trinity was gone, replaced by Independence Bible Church (which I think later moved into the former Safeway at Main & Walnut). Their new neighbor was Midwest Advertising, which was replaced by 1973 with an antique store.

1975 brought a change of churches again, this time it is Zion's Warning. 1977 found Zion warned away, and replaced by World Redemption Church, which was gone by 1978.

1980 found both addresses vacant, with 914 not even listed from 1980-85. In 1981 908 became apartments, which lasted until 1997. Meanwhile over at 914 Keron's Florist moved in come 1985, but in 86 it became Thompson's Florist, which vacated between 1998-2000. No businesses have been in either location since 2000.

Thanks for all this research. In the fifteen years between 1985 and 2000, I must have driven by there on a return trip to town and noticed a flower shop. That is something that a delicatessen was located there in 1950.

This was the scene in 1916:

Well, okay.

Let's try Jennings Road on the west, Bundshcu on the North, Salisbury on the south, and Jones Road on the east. Highway 24 cutting through on the northwest.

Chuckle, yes it is. That was the only street with the name Pine that I was able to find in Independence. It was once in the town of Lake City, Mo. Those roads are actually paved believe it or not.
