I've been wondering for years what the population of Independence was in the mid-thirties and what it was in the mid-fifties. (When I was born and then graduated.)

My Dad used to say, "Lord, when I first came to Independence from Mounds, Oklahoma in the Depression there was only l500 people here. Now, twenty years later, there's l5,000!"

At least I think those were the right figures. Does anyone know? I'd really appreciate the facts.

Interesting that Independence would add 49,302 residents from 1960-1970 and then only add 176 residents from 1970-1980. That's crazy.

Has any metro area suburb added 50,000 new residents in one census?
