We moved from and back to the Albany area. And I'm originally from Kansas, so I blame myself. Living in a place like Kansas after living so many years in NY was just too much culture shock for us. It's something that's hard to put into words....you just have to experience it. You might like...think positive. KC definitely better than Wichita.

Is Wichita really as religious as it sounds? Would people having a problem with a couple "living in sin"? Sorry if the questions are naive, I am totally clueless with all of this.

Default move to wichita

ScarlettsMom, there are many good areas around Wichita that fit your criteria. We live in Valley Center and it is very nice. Small town, excellent schools and good access to Wichita. Several hospitals are near 135 which is one of the divided highways that run through the city. Wichita is very family-friendly and likeable. I was very surprised how well we like it here. We have great neighbors and love the small town. Yet I get to work downtown in about 20 minutes, 25 minutes if there is traffic.

Many people seem to have bad things to say about their experience here. "Living in sin" is treated here like it is everywhere else. Wichita is a conservative town with many good churches. Perhaps that is why it is so family-friendly. If you want a very "progressive and cosmopolitan" area, it is probably not the best place for you. Some of us like the conservative nature of the town. I don't consider progressive and cosmopolitan to be especially desirable. I can get that in many places.

I decided a long time ago to be narrow minded. People who describe themselves are open-minded are really not that way. To be open-minded, imho, means that you must accept everything. Liberal, conservative, libertarian, etc. all views have to be equally acceptable and equally true. So by that measure, everyone else is narrow-minded in their own way too.

Derby and Goddard are both growing towns with good schools. Maize is another good area but has grown very commercial.

The rule of thumb for good schools it to look where the new houses are being built. Parents who build new homes don't generally build them in areas where schools are poor.

I like the peace and quiet here. And the great cost of living. And the laid-back lifestyle. Good Luck.

Default Thanks to everyone! Keep it coming!

I just want to say thanks to all for taking the time to assist my family and I in our quest. I did research on various churches and began researching all the areas mentioned, including places to live. There was an eye opening experience re: GOD. I may not agree with every aspect of every statement, but I do agree we all have a right to our opinion. In New York I have been exposed to it all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So nothing stated surprises me. Hey the bottom line is, you and you alone must answer for your sins. This is from the unbeliever to the extremeist. However you must choose. My best advice would be is to read the bible as much as posible and pray in the same fashion. Time is relative to the person holding and looking at thier watch. Remember even a broken watch is correct at least two times a day!

Thanks for your suggestions. Any thoughts on local groups, charities or organizations that would be good for meeting other couples and making friends?

Do not move to Kansas if all you want to do is complain about how much better the place you left is than Kansas. Too many times I hear people complain about how bad Kansas is. the weather is hot in summer and cold in winter. In the fall and spring it can be very cold one day and very hot the next. Kansas was settled by people from the north and people from the deep south. So what kind of food do you like? People for the most part are people, no mater where you live. All the major churches are here. The schools are very good.

New homes do not mean good schools are nearby. with bussing you do not know where your kids will be, until you ask.

If you want a good laugh go to youtube and look up west buro baptist church and this bunch of lunitics, small minds on the bible is worse than small minds on crack.
Just for clarification, this church is in Topeka, not Wichita.

Default Atk

I grew up in NYC and lived in NJ for most of my life. I moved to KS in the beginning of the year (Topeka) and it was a culture shock. The people there are really friendly there but the winter is cold (because of the constant wind).
I moved back East after a couple of months, the taxes are high, at least in Topeka, the property tax is 1.7% of the purchase price of the house (+ special tax of $2,000 a year if it's new in some areas), annual tax on your vehicle, RV and boat, sales tax, etc.

Lawrence is a really nice town if you don't mind the commute, a college town and the down town area has great restaurants and you are 30 mins. from KC. It didn't work out for me and my family but it might be a good move for you. You might want to move there first for a couple of months to experience it first before uprooting the whole family. Good luck.

Yes Kansas Folk are very friendly, depending on where you live. I, too, was from NY so it' was a big change being in Kansas.

You have to remember - it might seem cheaper in Kansas to live, but in reality I think it balances out from living in other places. The salaries tend to be a bit lower in Kansas, whereas - they are higher in other states. Then the housing, etc.

I don't live in KS anymore and there are times I do miss it, but I'll probably never reside there again. It just doesn't offer what I want or need in life.
