Hello all, I am more than likely on the move again and I have always found this forum to be very insightful.

I am debating whether or not to accept a position that will land me in the KS/MO area. I will primarily be working from home so commuting is not going to be an issue for me. My wife, however, will more than likely land a job in the Overland Park area.

A little background:

We moved to Santa Monica CA from Alpharetta GA less than a year ago. From what I can tell Alpharetta and Overland Park share many characteristics. We really enjoy living in Santa Monica (walkability, mom and pop shops, diversity) but also miss some of the conveniences of living near/in the suburbs (Target, Walmart, Lifetime Fitness).

We would like to find the best of both worlds and from the research I have done online Overland Park and KCMO keep popping up as potential areas but neither seem to have the right mix of city and suburb.

We like the idea of living in OP for the conveniences, large apartments and the potential of having zero commute. KCMO seems like a lot more fun with much more do and hopefully a dash of diversity.

We don't have kids and do not intend on buying so the quality of the education system is not at all important to us.

Can anyone recommend an area that will appease our need to be able to buy cheap groceries at a Super Target while not being bored to death on the weekends?

We have never been to either KS or MO so any insight will be appreciated.

Brookside in kcmo.

It's urban/suburban. You can walk or bike to the entertainment districts of the city or take a bus, but then you are also very close to all the amenities of suburbia along state line road and just west of state line road, plus Brookside itself has some nice shopping and dining options.

It would be an easy commute to OP (under 15-20 minutes). There is everything you can imagine retail wise within 10-15 minutes of Brookside along State Line, the Plaza and in Leawood/Overland Park.

It's a very charming area with mature trees and it's a vibrant community.

If schools are not an issue (although many families live there and work around the schools), then really Brookside is exactly what you are looking for.

^I wholeheartedly agree about Brookside. It's in the city limits, but really is quite inner-ring suburban in feel and the housing stock is lovely. Because schools don't matter to you in the least, I highly recommend this area. You could get something on the other side of the state line in say Fairway, which also has lovely homes, but you lose out on the walkability of Brookside and you'll be paying an upcharge for schools you won't use.

Brookside was my first thought when I read your original post. But keep in mind that anything in Kansas City is in easy driving distance so no matter where you live in the metro, you are only going to be bored on the weekends if you don't choose to get out and do something.
