One thing about the MO vs KS side that throws people off are intersections of the same names.

I-35 and Antioch. I have had people go to the wrong one before.

435 and 95th
435 and 87th
435 and 70
435 and 35

You have to say which state! If you say 435 and 35 to somebody that lives on the MO side, they will think you mean up by Liberty/Shoal Creek not Lenexa.

Also 435 and State Line is not the same as 435 and State Avenue.

This all might sound trivial to many locals, but trust me, this screws up a lot of visitors or people relatively new to the area.

Not to mention trying to explain where a wreck is on the downtown loop. (Wreck - there's that word again...)

South of KCMO is a town called Nevada (Like the state), but people in MO call is NeVAYduh. Drives me nuts! Also, there is a town south east of KCMO called Versailles, like the French Treaty, but the locals call it VerSALless. Drives me nuts too...lol

Nevada, Missouri isn't supposed to be pronounced like the state Nevada.

Nevada MO was incorporated about 10 years before the state of NV.

Still sounds odd, but if that's how they do it...more power to them.

There is a Nevada Iowa and they say it the same way as Missouri, but shouldn't it be spelled Neveda, instead of Nevada.

People around here always misprounce Coupon, its Koo-pon, not Q-pon. I think thats a northern/southern thing

I hear koopon a bit more than qpon in KC. A friend from Jersey says q-pon, OH too. Always found qpon to be strange but it's pretty mixed in KC.

Seems like it's different everywhere, not specifically regional..
Why do some people pronounce the word coupon "COO-Pon"? - Yahoo! Answers

On 'wreck' vs. 'accident'. Do a news.google search of last storm and you'll see 'wreck' used in articles all over US, including N, NE, and in US Today. The Star used 'accidents' over last few days.

Was just in New Orleans and found it curious that locals wear t-shirts with local lingo more than I've seen in any city. Not in the touristy area, that is. In Tampa now and it all about snowbirds that are back and bluehairs at the 4pm buffet.

None of my family in KC can pronounce the word "wash" to save their lives lol! Woosh, warsh, wush...

And then they call County Line Rd. (between KCK and JoCo) Kantalahn Road. They prounounce Kansas more as "Kenzuz" and Kansas City is "KanCity"

My family alsways said "pop" (never soda) and athletic shoes were always "tenni-shoes", never "sneakers".

Eastern MO and eastern WI are only two Midwest areas that say soda, the rest is mostly pop. I hear soda fairly often in KC but mostly hear pop. Coming from STL, I never heard pop until moving to KC and it sounded so contemporary, making soda sound old fashioned. I say pop now. When I want soda, it's club soda in a majito.
