Hi everyone,

I'm new here and hoping you guys can help me. My husband is coming out of the Army in a couple of months and is pretty much guaranteed a job in Kansas City. We are an interracial couple, him black, me white, and we have a son. We are very quiet people, not into partying, etc.

I need to know the best areas to live. I need safe areas to go walk my son, quiet neighborhoods if possible. I also would like neighborhoods where race won't be a huge issue. Can you guys help me out? Thanks a lot

You may want to post on the Kansas City board, under the Missouri forum. Be specific about where your husband is working, if you can.

Where specifically will you be going to school?

Unfortunately, the casinos and the main night life districts are not in the same area.

The two largest nightlife/entertainment districts are Westport in Midtown KCMO and Power and Light in Downtown. To stereotype the difference between the two areas: P&L is more frat-boy and dance club scene, while Westport is more hipster (although there is a fairly wide range of people in both areas).

The casinos are generally somewhere along the Missouri River, aside from Hollywood Casino, which is on the far western edge of KCK. Isle of Capri is pretty close to Downtown/P&L, but that place doesn't seem to be very well liked (I don't really go to casinos, so I can't give any personal input on which are the best). Harrah's is just a bit further from Downtown and seems to have a better reputation.

So, for the best proximity to nightlife and casinos, you might want to look somewhere in Downtown, however those apartments generally aren't too affordable. Places in Midtown are definitely more affordable, and that would put you more centrally located for nightlife like Westport, Plaza, Martini Corner, etc - but further away from casinos and possibly further away from your school in KCK.

Try the River Market or North Kansas City. I live in the River Market currently. It's an urban neighborhood, close to several casinos, and nightlife. With the new streetcar system going in, you can ride for free to places like the Crossroads district (excellent for First Fridays) and the Power and Light District. Depending on your income there is also affordable loft housing available. I have several friends who are recent college grads that live in these buildings. Again, it's an urban area, so small petty crimes do happen from time to time, but I've lived here for three years and never had any issues whatsoever. Police presence is excellent and I feel completely safe walking around my neighborhood at any hour of the day or night.
